Checking a bag? First, check your wallet …

Six airlines — United Airlines, JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, WestJet and Air Canada — recently raised their fees for checked bags and for overweight and oversized bags.

JetBlue now charges economy-class passengers $30 for the first checked bag, $40 for the second and $150 for the third and each additional bag after that. (Previous fees: $25, $35 and $100, respectively).

United Airlines also raised checked bag fees and now charges $30 for the first checked bag on domestic flights and flights to the Caribbean and Central America. The fee is $40 for the second bag (but $50 for flights to Canada) and $150 for a third bag and any additional.

Delta Air Lines raised fees Sept. 19, to $30 for the first checked bag in the main cabin and $40 for the second checked bag and, on Sept. 20, American Airlines joined in, alerting passengers of “updated” baggage fees of $30 for the first bag and $40 for the second, starting with tickets purchased Sept. 21 for travel in the United States and other North American and Caribbean destinations.

Checked bag fees now start at $30 for the first checked bag and $50 for the second on both Air Canada and WestJet.

On most airlines, certain fares, fare bundles, mileage program status and credit cards offer bag fee waivers.

In other ‘new fee’ news, Southwest Airlines announced changes to the EarlyBird boarding program. Program purchasers are automatically checked in 36 hours before their flights (12 hours before “regular” travelers may check-in) and are among the first to board and choose a seat in the carrier’s open-seating system. Southwest changed the EarlyBird fee from a flat $15 to a variable pricing structure of $15, $20 and $25, based on the length of the flight and how popular the service is on that route. More details here.

Tired of fees? This may cheer you up: American Airlines announced it now offers 16 channels of free live TV to the movie and TV program line-up on 100 mainline domestic aircraft with plans to add live TV and high-speed internet throughout its mainline narrow body fleet of more than 700 aircraft during 2019. (The airline currently offers live TV on international flights.) More details here.
