Most passengers aren’t exactly thrilled over the quality of airline food, but AirAsia is betting against that trend. The low-cost carrier plans to open a restaurant called Santan that will serve meals based on the airline’s in-flight menu of the same name.
AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes shared the news last month on Larry King Live, but didn’t specify a timeline or location for the restaurant.
“I think our food is fantastic. We believe in it so much, we’re going to start a fast-food restaurant out of it,” said Fernandes.
Santan is the name of the airline’s in-flight menu, which offers “a wide selection of Asean, international and vegetarian options,” according to AirAsia’s website. Passengers can pre-book meals up to 24 hours ahead of a scheduled flight, but the meals are not included in the ticket price.
Dishes on the Santan menu include nasi lemak, chicken teriyaki with rice, butter chicken with rice and Mapo tofu with rice.
