Air Asia made a move toward founding a low-cost airline in China. The Zhengzhou-based airline agreed to a joint venture deal with state-owned conglomerate Everbright on the launch.
“In just 16 years, we have successfully built a presence in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, India and Japan, with China closing the loop on all major territories in Asia Pacific,” said Tony Fernandes, CEO, Air Asia, who sees the deal as a final link in the chain for his company as it taps into growing demand in China. The country is set to overtake the United States in the next decade as the world’s biggest aviation market.
As part of the move, Air Asia will open a dedicated low-cost carrier terminal, an aviation academy to train pilots and maintenance facilities to service aircraft.
Air Asia currently flies to 15 destinations in China.
