The hit television show Afro-Latino Travels with Kim Haas is gearing up for the release of its third season. In celebration, host and executive producer Kim Haas is hosting a small group adventure to Guatemala from May 23 to 31.
The tour takes in Antigua’s cobblestone streets and the dramatic volcanic shores of Lake Atitlán. Along the way, participants will be immersed in the art, rhythms and flavors of this vibrant land, while experiencing the living heritage of local African and Indigenous communities. Encounters include members of Antigua’s Garifuna, an Afro-Caribbean people with West African and Indigenous roots; and the Mayan communities of Lake Atitlán, who served as the region’s first custodians and still act as keepers of cultural traditions, ancestral languages and spiritual practices.
“The goal of all our Afro-Latino Tours is to travel in a way that uplifts the communities we visit. The Garifuna and Mayan peoples hold histories that deserve to be heard, celebrated, and protected,” said Kim Haas, host and executive producer, Afro-Latino Travels and Afro-Latino Tours. “Through travel, we can help amplify those voices and create deeper, more meaningful connections.”
Stays are in boutique hotels.
Here’s what’s on tap during the eight-day, seven-night expedition:
- A welcome dinner with live music within a fascinating stone cave
- A guided walking tour along cobblestone streets including colonial churches and market places of historic Antigua
- A flower dye workshop where participants will learn to transform natural botanicals into unique fabrics
- A Garifuna cooking class exploring and celebrating Afro-Caribbean culinary traditions
- A hands-on candle-making workshop led by skilled artisans, utilizing local traditions and natural patterns and motifs handed down through generations
- A stirring fire ceremony led by healer Tz’ules, venerating Mayan traditions of reflection, renewal and connection with the natural world
- A farewell dinner at Sublime, recently celebrated as one of Latin America’s Top 50 Restaurants.
Prices for Roots & Rhythms of Guatemala with Kim Haas begin at $4,795 per person, based upon double occupancy. Stay tuned for season three of Afro-Latino Travels with Kim Haas, premiering nationally on PBS.org and PBS television stations nationwide.

Apr 13, 2026I Took a Trip Without Knowing the Destination … Here’s What I Learned
When it comes to travel planning, I’m a control freak. I book flights based on aircraft type and seat availability, overanalyze hotel reviews, know exactly what I’m going to eat or drink before ever setting foot in a restaurant, and capture every last detail in a lengthy Google document. So, when I recently had the opportunity to take a surprise trip — with nary a decision made by me — I was a little skeptical. The thought of relinquishing my travel fate to someone else gives me the shakes. However, a tiny part of me was curious about what would happen if I let go, so Type A personality be damned, I decided to face my inner planner head-on and head out on an unknown solo getaway.
