On England’s southwestern tip, Cornwall is a place of beaches, dramatic coastlines, harbor villages and, of course, castles. In fact, the region is home to several must-visit fortifications and castles, including one purported to be the place of conception of the legendary King Arthur. Add these three Cornish sites to your U.K. travel list:
Long associated with legends related to King Arthur, the first recorded relation to the English mythical king dates back to the 12th century in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History of the Kings of Britain. The castle is even home to an iconic, life-sized bronze statue inspired by King Arthur. The confirmed history of the castle is just as fascinating. Situated atop the steep and rocky cliffs of the region, the current castle ruins (earlier settlements on the site were once the strongholds of post-Roman Cornish kings) dates to the 13th century, and visitors can explore its grounds. Be sure to also visit nearby Merlin’s Cave when the tide is out.
Built by notorious King Henry VIII near Falmouth, this 16th-century artillery fort has endured centuries of wars and political upheavals. Open to the public, visitors can climb to the top of the Tudor keep and take in panoramic views. Take the tunnel down to the Half Moon Battery and travel back in time to World War II and look for historic guns throughout the property. Volunteer-led talks are held daily.
Just a 20-minute ferry ride from Falmouth and Pendennis Castle, St. Mawes is the sister fortress to Pendennis. Also constructed under King Henry VIII, this castle was used to guard the anchorage of Carrick Roads. Visitors today can enjoy views of the sea and passing ships, discover the famous collection of guns and cannons, and learn about daily life in the castle.

May 6, 2026Parkhotel Oberhausen Review
Oberhausen, on the Ruhr River at the outskirts of Essen, is not merely a city transformed — it is wholly repurposed. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, its main industries were coal mining, iron and steel production, and manufacturing. Today, it is defined by its intentional evolutionary path toward a green, 21st-century city tailored for a healthier and more outdoorsy standard of living. What makes it a particularly compelling choice for a meeting or conference destination is it doesn’t hide its past. Instead, it shows how a municipality can use what’s there to move toward a more environmentally sound future.
