In 1989, Northern Sweden’s ICEHOTEL was the world’s first hotel made of snow and ice. After 27 years of being rebuilt each winter, ICEHOTEL 365 will be the first permanent frozen accommodation to stay open year-round.
New, solar-powered cooling technology will allow the legendary hotel to host guests in search of the midnight sun as well as the Northern Lights. The hotel, including a bar, art gallery, 10 luxury suites and 55 rooms, is made up of 30,000 liters of frozen water from the Torne River.
“The guests are a part of something historical,” said Yngve Bergqvist, chief executive officer, Icehotel. “They inaugurate the first ice hotel in the world that will be open year-round and can experience the finishing touches of the building up close, which is a memory that will last a lifetime.”
Located just north of the Arctic Circle in Jukkasjarvi, the hotel has been built to a fresh blueprint each year using ice taken from the nearby river in the spring and cold stored over the summer. The sections of hotel will melt and be rebuilt as usual, allowing guests to witness new icy artwork each year. The building material used for the hotel is called snice, a snow and ice mixture. Construction involves enough of it to make 700 million snowballs.
The ambient temperature might be -5 Celsius but there are thick capes, high-quality sleeping bags and luxury fur throws to keep guests cozy. To ensure guests don’t miss the Northern Lights, there is a special auroral alarm alerting guests. The hotel, which has its own chapel, hosts around 100 weddings each year — a surreal winter wonderland. Guests consume about 27,000 cocktails in the Icebar each season, which now has branches worldwide from New York City to Budapest. Guests have the opportunity to take advantage of the outdoor activities offered like dog sledding in the winter to hiking under the midnight sun in the summer.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
