Processions, fire-walking and bladed ladder climbs — where participants scale ladders constructed from sharp iron blades — are just a few of the festivities that mark Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival. Coinciding with ninth lunar months, the festival takes place twice this year, an event that occurs only once every 100 years. From Sept. 24–Oct. 2 and again from Oct. 24–Nov. 1, visitors to the festival can witness the daring deeds mentioned above while enjoying tasty vegetarian fare and street food. Less dramatic entertainment includes dancing, fireworks and the music of drums and traditional Thai instruments.
