The standard beach resorts of today have the majority of their amenities in common due to their need to appeal to the widest variety of travelers. In an effort to set itself apart from such cookie-cutter resorts, a new accommodation in Tulum, Mexico, challenges the idea of this vacation tradition and exposes guests to the more relaxed environment beach-goers seek.

The 32 guestrooms at Habitas Tulum rest under canvas tents atop wood platforms, removing the fluff and frills that come with all-inclusive resorts. Inside the tent is a king-sized bed, lush rugs, wooden furniture and air conditioning. Just outside the rooms lie thick palm and grape trees, but five oceanfront rooms also are available, equipped with private patios.

Guests at the beachy boutique hotel undergo an experience beyond that of a simple stay with a bed and pillow. Upon check-in, guests are asked to think about what they want from their stay, whether it’s a spiritual awakening via the on-site yoga classes or some quiet time by the infinity pool or ocean.
