With the start of a new year comes hope for the future, and travelers harness this with a slew of new travel-related technologies rolling out throughout the year, aimed at making the travel process more seamless.
For starters, some airlines will automatically check in passengers 24 hours before flights, as long as travelers download the airline’s mobile app and can access an electronic boarding pass. For those who continue to check in at the airport, tech company LG plans to roll out customer service robots to roam departures halls and assist travelers with basic check-in queries. The first model of this robot arrived at Seoul’s Incheon Airport just before the 2018 Olympics.
TSA PreCheck members may be subject to a new biometric testing technology that will allow security personnel to scan travelers’ fingerprints and irises, making the fast security lane even faster. Meanwhile, Lufthansa will continue to test its facial scanning software for passengers who board flights in Los Angeles (LAX) and Frankfurt (FRA).
Finally, European tech company Amadeus plans to develop virtual reality headsets to allow travelers to see the view from a selected airplane seat or to gauge the size of a hotel bed before booking.
