TAP Portugal invests $75 million in a fleet renewal program to retrofit new onboard cabins for the airline’s Airbus A330 fleet. The first aircraft to be refurbished, named Joao Goncalves Zarco, commenced flying between the United States and Lisbon in the beginning of March.
The carrier says the new seats are aimed at improving the cabin to compare to the A330neo soon joining the fleet. TAP will be the launch customer for the new Airspace by Airbus cabin, set to deliver the new aircraft at the end of the year.
TAP’s Portuguese identity is recognizable through the aircraft interior, thanks to partnerships with Portuguese companies like Almadesign, who selected the materials and developed the finishing, and Couro Azul, who supplied the leather used in the Executive Class seats.
The economy-class cabin will comprise two categories: economy and Economy Plus. The new configuration and design will provide a fresh atmosphere with more legroom, deeper seat recline and new seat covers in green and grey in economy and green and red in Economy Plus.
In Executive Class, the changes will be more obvious, with 25 new, fully flat, reclining chairs more than six feet long when reclined. The seats include reading lights, tables with storage space, cup holders, headphone connections, USB slots and electrical sockets.
