TAP Portugal unveiled its retro aircraft livery this month, with an Airbus A330 featuring designs from the 1950s. The new look includes typography and colors first seen on a Lockheed Super Constellation aircraft in 1955. Emblazoned with Transportes Aéreos Portugueses, the aircraft is christened “Portugal,” and is the second to receive the name of TAP’s country of origin, the first a Boeing 747-200 from 1972. It’s from this decade the aircraft takes its primary inspiration.
The throwbacks continue with intage-style uniforms for the cabin crew, designed by French stylist Louis Féraud, and extends to cabin interiors, meals and even in-flight entertainment, with films and music from the decade. Additionally, several of the food items served on the aircraft boast 70s-style branding, including some Coca Cola products and Sagres beer. Business-class amenity bags feature 70s-designed items, such as lavender cologne.
However, the debut of the vintage experience isn’t the only thing the airline is celebrating. In July, it welcomed a record 1.4 million passengers, up 21 percent and doubling traffic originating in the United States since last year.
To accommodate its growing customer base, TAP welcomes 53 new aircraft, with delivery starting in 2018. Among those are 14 A330-900 neo aircraft and 39 A320 neo family aircraft.
