Tahiti, French Polynesia

Destinations / Oceania

When you think of paradise, Tahiti likely springs to mind. Dubbed the “Queen of the Pacific,” Tahiti is the largest of the 118 islands and atolls that comprise the Islands of Tahiti. Deep valleys and waterfalls characterize its interior landscape, while the coastal lands bloom with tropical flowers and the hustle and bustle of the locals. Tahiti’s capital city of Papeete, meaning water basket, offers travelers world-class resorts, spas, fine dining and shopping.

GETTING THERE
International flights arrive at Tahiti-Fa’a’a-International Airport; Air Tahiti Nui offers non-stop service from the United States. Before arrival, travelers should arrange airport transportation through hotels or tour companies. During the day, bus service is available. At night, the best option for transport to/from the airport is taxi, which will cost around $20–40, depending on the time and distance. Rental cars are also available.

GETTING AROUND
Around Tahiti, travel like a local on the public bus system. Modern buses replaced most of the island’s famous le trucks, but some do remain. One-way trips cost about $1.75, or $2.50 at night. To travel from one end of the line to the other is approximately $10. Taxis can be flagged on the street or found at designated stations. Fares are set by the government and posted at the Centre Vaima station. Few taxis have meters, so agree on a fare before the journey begins. Renting a car and driving is also a popular option.

9–5
Les 3 Brasseurs
Polynesia’s only microbrewery, Les 3 Brasseurs opened in Papeete in 1998. For a lunch or dinner meeting, visit not only for the beer but also for traditional Ch’tis, Flemish and Alsatian cuisines. Alfresco dining is available on the patio, and live music is offered on select evenings.

Le Lotus
Located under a thatched roof overlooking the lagoon waters of InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa, Le Lotus is one of the island’s most acclaimed restaurants. Impress clients for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or dazzle a date with a meal in the romantic setting. A selection of French wines accompanies the cuisine.

Le Méridien Tahiti
Find luxurious meeting accommodations at Le Méridien Tahiti, offering 67,000 square feet of conference space including a ballroom and two modern executive boardrooms. The hotel also includes two first-rate restaurants, bars, a Polynesian show and cooking classes and other activities.

AFTER 5
Mango Café
This downtown Papeete restaurant’s menu changes regularly but always offers local dishes featuring ingredients like mahi mahi, fafa, coconut and, of course, mango. The wine list is among the best on the island.

Royal Tahitien Hotel
The bar and restaurant at Royal Tahitien Hotel offer panoramic views of the volcanic black-sand beach and are the perfect spot for a nightcap as the sun sets. With traditional décor and a classic Tahitian ceiling, the restaurant and bar transform on Friday and Saturday nights, welcoming local bands and dancers.

Vai’ete Square
From 6 p.m. to 3 a.m., this is one of the liveliest spots in downtown Papeete. Roulottes, or colorful food wagons, fill the square, offering local cuisine and desserts from Tahitian pizza to calf heart. Live music and performances get visitors in the mood to explore the area’s nightlife.
