Soaring above the Elbe riverfront in Hamburg in brick and glass magnificence, the new Elbphilharmonie concert hall will seat 2,100 in the main performance space, with two smaller halls. Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron designed the upper glass façade to suggest a ship arriving via the river; an effect made even more striking by the lower brick foundation that emphasizes the floating impression of the glass above.
Yasuhisa Toyota designed advanced acoustical features, including a “white skin” surface comprised of 10,000 gypsum fiber panels. The acoustic effect is enhanced by the central placement of the orchestra and conductor’s rostrum. The NDR Symphony Orchestra will call the space home. The hall will also feature a hotel, restaurant and 45 luxurious residential apartments. Stay tuned for performance news, as ticket will go on sale around springtime of 2016.
