Spring is the ideal time to plan a getaway in the Catskill Mountains, and a great base is Emerson Resort & Spa. Relax on the resort’s 20 lovely acres and take part in local, artisan-led workshops; embark on a mushroom tour with John Michelotti of Catskill Fungi; try your hand at fly fishing on Esopus Creek with Catskill Mountain Angler; or play at Lazy Swan or at the private Woodstock Golf Club — which hosts The Woodstock Open.
The Golf in the Catskills getaway includes a three-night stay (the third night is complimentary), plus golf for one–three days (fees are additional) and a complimentary golf cart. Art workshop-themed escapes feature demonstrations with local Hudson Valley artists Peter Clapper and Karen O’Neil. The three-night art stay includes the third complimentary night, plus a tour of the resort’s art collection and instruction on composition and design, led by Clapper and O’Neil. Dates for themed getaways through 2018 can be found on the resort’s website.

The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.

I am looking out at Vietnam’s largest city from the country’s tallest building. Sitting in a comfortable chair facing the floor-to-ceiling window, I have taken in the view in daylight and darkness at dusk and dawn. It’s ever-changing and always hypnotic.
