The capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, celebrated the unveiling of a new terminal at its Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Officials hope the move will lure international airlines away from the larger airports in Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, according to a report by USA Today. The new Terminal 3, cost $560 million and opened last month. Domestic flights on national carrier Garuda have already started and international flights are expected to shift to the new terminal this month. Other airlines are expected to begin migrating their flights to the terminal so the airport can refurbish two older terminals, built in 1984 and 1992, later this year to accommodate Indonesia as one of the world’s fastest growing air travel markets. “This terminal was built to change the image of the capital Jakarta,” Budi Karya Sumadi, transport minister, Indonesia, told USA Today. When the renovated terminals are fully operational in early 2018, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport will have the capacity to handle 62 million passengers a year. That’s a growth from 54 million passengers last year, which made the airport the 18^th busiest in the world, according to Airports Council International. The airport is also expecting an electric train to begin running from the airport to the city in early 2017.
