Swiss International Air Lines is the world’s first certified “allergy-friendly” airline, meeting the criteria of the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation. SWISS teamed up with ECARF in an effort to offer travelers with allergies more user-friendly service.

Starting in May, SWISS will introduce ground and in-flight products designed to enhance the air travel experience for allergy sufferers. These innovations will include new alternative (lactose- and gluten-free) food and drinks, along with cabin interior changes.

Lactose- and gluten-free food and beverage options will include lactose-free coffee cream and a lactose-free version of the popular SWISS chocolate bar. Depending on the length of the flight, SWISS guests may request special snacks (candy bars, yogurt or cakes) that address the needs of allergy sufferers. Passengers will also be able to order special meals in all seating classes on long-haul flights and in business class within Europe up to 24 hours before their scheduled departure.

In addition, first- and business-class passengers may select pillows stuffed with synthetic materials as an alternative to the down-filled version, and the carrier will remove decorative flowers and air fresheners from its aircraft cabins.

“We have seen a steady increase over the past few years in our customers’ need for an air travel environment that pays due regard to any allergic conditions,” said Frank Maier, head of product and services, SWISS.  “We’ve been working with ECARF to provide a concrete response to these demands to make everyone’s air travel experience as pleasant and problem-free as possible.”
