A new report by The Daily Beast shows emergency passenger exit safety tests do not account for shrinking airline seats — and this may pose a safety risk.
The report shows Federal Aviation Administration tests are outdated and do not account for smaller seats and reduced legroom in economy classes. The studies also do not factor in the larger size of the average airline passenger in the United States.
The report also says modern coach seating does not meet FAA standards for safe seating of flight attendants in emergency situations. Reporters looked at more than 900 pages of federal airline documents and regulations.
The Daily Beast said while the FAA and aircraft manufacturer Boeing conducted testing with the smaller seat configurations, the test results were not made public.
The report’s findings reflect some charges made in a lawsuit filed by passenger rights group Flyers Rights, which asked federal courts to force the FAA to review and update its safety protocols involving seating. A judge agreed there was a “plausible life-and-death safety concern,” and ordered the FAA to respond. However, the judge said the seat dimensions were not important to the testing of emergency exits.
