General

On July 6, Alaska Airlines kicked off non-stop, daily service between Mineta San Jose International Airport and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Flights, on an Airbus A320 aircraft, head east at 7 a.m. and head west at 5 p.m. More details here.

Alaska Airlines also plans new daily non-stop service between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Pittsburgh International Airport starting Sept. 6. Flights will depart Seattle at 8:25 am and leave Pittsburgh at 7:50 p.m. More details here.

On July 17, Hawaiian Airlines began daily, year-round service between California’s Oakland International Airport and Lihue (LIH), on the Hawai’ian Island of Kauai. Service was supposed to launch in April 2018 but was postponed due to delays in delivery of the carrier’s A321neo fleet of aircraft. More details here.

JetBlue will launch daily, non-stop flights to Mexico City (MEX) from both New York (JFK) and Boston Logan International Airport on Oct. 25. (More details here.) On Nov. 10, JetBlue will launch weekly (Saturday) flights between Boston and Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport. Details here.

Norwegian Air Shuttle launched service between Los Angeles International Airport and Madrid-Barajas Airport July 15 and between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Madrid on July 17. Both flights operate four times each week. More details here.

Norwegian also plans to begin twice-weekly direct flights between Tampa International Airport and London-Gatwick Airport Oct. 31, with service on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. British Airways currently offers service between the two cities.

In the first half of July, Southwest Airlines added four routes from Oakland International Airport: a daily non-stop to San Antonio (SAT) began July 8; a daily non-stop to Orlando (MCO) started July 14; and daily nonstops from OAK to both Minneapolis-St. Paul International and Indianapolis International airports kicked off July 15. (A daily non-stop to Newark Liberty International Airport launched April 8.) More details here.

Southwest also plans to begin daily, non-stop service between Louisville International Airport (SDF) and Dallas Love Field (DAL) Jan. 7, 2019. More details here.

In the fall, United Airlines will shift three regional routes from Newark-Liberty International Airport to Washington’s Dulles International Airport. Starting Oct. 4, United will use 50-seat regional jets to fly twice-daily round-trips between Dulles and Chattanooga (CHA), Tennessee; Ithaca (ITH), New York; and Scranton (AVP), Pennsylvania. More details here.

On Oct. 27, just a year after launching a flight between Los Angeles (LAX) and Singapore (SIN) that was billed as the longest flight to or from the United States, United Airlines is dropping that service and instead adding a second daily flight between Singapore and San Francisco (SFO).

Travelers who wish to fly direct between LAX and Singapore’s Changi Airport will still have an option as Singapore Airlines begins non-stop service between the two airports Nov. 2. The route will initially operate three times a week, but increase to daily Nov. 9. An additional three weekly flights between LAX and SIN will be added Dec. 7, for a total of 10. Details here.
