Interested in learning more about Cuba’s colorful history? Cuba Travel Network has been leading visitors around the island nation for the past 14 years, and just introduced a new, themed self-drive itinerary — Revolutionary Trail: From Santiago de Cuba to Havana. For 10 days and 11 nights, intrepid explorers can enjoy a history intensive that takes in the sites of major, revolutionary Cuban events, beginning at Parque Céspedes where Fidel Castro made a speech from the balcony of the town hall. There’s also the chance to tour the Spanish fortress El Morro Castle, originally constructed in 1519 and ranking as the largest in all of the Americas. Sites of revolutionary significance include Granjita Siboney, where rebels attacked the barracks at Moncada, and a farmhouse where items and documents relating to the incursion can be viewed; the 16th-century El Cobre, the location of an original Spanish-built copper mine; the World Heritage Site of San Pedro de la Roca Castle in Santiago; the German landing site at Playa Las Coloradas; one of the oldest surviving Cuban European settlements at Sancti Spiritus; Che Guevara’s remote command post Caballete de Casa in the Escambray Mountains; Playa Girón, also known as the infamous Bay of Pigs; and time to enjoy Havana. There’s also hiking in the Sierra Maestra Mountains, and time to visit museum exhibitions and sample plenty of authentic Cuban food.

Apr 17, 2024Amansara Review
It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.

I am looking out at Vietnam’s largest city from the country’s tallest building. Sitting in a comfortable chair facing the floor-to-ceiling window, I have taken in the view in daylight and darkness at dusk and dawn. It’s ever-changing and always hypnotic.
