Had enough of planes, trains and automobiles? It might be time to take a slow ride in the form of a self-guided cycling adventure. Pure Adventures, a U.S.-based purveyor of European adventure tours, suggests itineraries that include plenty of time to stop and smell the roses at local festivals and markets.
Ride into an Italian town just in time for a culinary fest or cycle village to village, tracing your Celtic roots in Ireland during The Gathering 2013, a year-long celebration welcoming people of Irish ancestry — and everyone with an appreciation for Irish heritage — home to gatherings in villages, towns and cities across the country.
Pedal your way through Italy’s Puglia region, savoring the landscape punctuated by trulli, white limestone dwellings that resemble pointed witches hats. Medieval festivals in towns around Florence dot the calendar beginning in May and onion and tulip celebrations begin cropping up in Umbria at about the same time.
And that’s just the beginning. Pure Adventures offers self-guided tours in more than a dozen countries including Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Scotland, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland.
Take a slow ride; take it easy.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
