The grand dame of Providence hotels is the historic Providence Biltmore Hotel, presiding over city center since its glamorous debut in 1922, when more than 250,000 lights illuminated its façade. The landmark property — a member of the Historic Hotels of America — was designed by Grand Central station’s architects Warren and Wetmore, and quickly became known as a hot venue during the Big Band era, when the legendary Bacchante Girls waited on diners in the Bacchante Room. The discreet push of a table button would bring a Bacchante Girl swirling gracefully to table side from across the bar’s glass floor, brilliantly under lit with pink lighting.
The girls may be gone, but fine dining remains at McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood & Steaks, where fresh local seafood is a prominent feature of the menu. The hotel is the location of a full service spa, with specialty massages, body treatments, facials and salon services. Through March, modern-day guests can take advantage of the hotel’s Skate & Stay getaway, which includes accommodations in a newly renovated junior suite, $20 for warming drinks at the hotel’s enormous Starbucks, and admission and skate rentals for up to four at the Alex and Ani City Center rink just outside the hotel lobby. Rates begin at $179 per night.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
