The City of Light shines even brighter at night, and not just because the Eiffel Tower stages a flash dance. From bawdy burlesque cabarets to classic opera, refined hotel cocktail bars to new bistros, Paris dishes out an evening menu that dazzles every taste.
For 5-star elegance, begin an evening on the town with cocktails in the opulent lounge of the Shangri-La Hotel, perhaps transitioning to La 8 léna, the newly opened front terrace for French- Asian cuisine with dessert from the ice cream trolley, created especially for the venue. Or opt for glitterati-watching: Jetsetters, fashionistas and film stars lurk in the dim recesses of the swank Hotel Costes lounge, where a DJ spins music all night.
Escape the hotel scene at these choice newcomers. Reserve a table at Mary Celeste, which earns kudos for its hipster vibe, inventive cocktails, excellent small-plate menu and oysters in season. Settle into the leather club chairs at Maison Claudel Vin et Whiskey and choose from two dozen wines and 80 whiskeys offered by the glass and selections from a nibbles menu. Shake N’ Smash scores a triple-header with seasonally changing cocktails, delicious sharable treats and a mix of live and DJ music. Order a pint of craft beer at The Green Goose, a proper Irish pub. Or go old school. The ultra-touristy Moulin Rouge, famed for its risqué shows with can-can girls and aerobatic and magic extravaganzas, is entering its 125th season.
The artsy Marais neighborhood is especially LGBT-friendly, with the greatest concentration of nightspots in the southwestern corner. Museum by day, bar by night and equal parts gallery, concert hall, cinema and café, everyone is comfortable at Le Comptoir Général, a self-described temple of ghetto culture that aims to promote and protect the culture of marginalized peoples worldwide.
Most Paris museums, including the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay and Rodin Museum, remain open at least one night a week. After feasting on the masterworks by Picasso, Matisse and Modigliani at the Musée National d’Art Moderne in the Centre Pompidou, drink in dreamy city views from Georges, the rooftop restaurant. Ramp up the culture level with an evening of opera, symphony or ballet in the historic Palais Garnier or contemporary Opéra Bastille.
Hungry for a nouveau taste of Paris? New bistros earning buzz include Le Bon Georges, with a daily changing blackboard menu focused on fresh and local fare; Coretta, praised by French cookery maven Patricia Wells as a “super contemporary, approachable, just-good-food bistro that’s totally right for the times”; Will, where up-and-coming chef William Pradeleix hangs his toque; Le Servan, a cozy spot with a seasonally driven menu with international accents; and Clamato, a seafood tapas bar by Théo Pourriat and Michelin-starred chef Bertrand Grébaut.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
