New York City-area airports are seeing an increase in passengers, but they remain among the worst in the United States for on-time performance, according to a study by Global Gateway Alliance, a group that advocates for greater investment in the region’s airports.
Only 70.58 percent of flights at Newark (EWR) operate on time, making it the worst in the United States, followed by San Francisco (SFO) (72.21 percent), LaGuardia (LGA) (73.93 percent) and JFK (74.22 percent). Minneapolis-Saint Paul (MSP) has the nation’s best on-time performance, 86.08 percent.
“What’s frustrating is that we know some of the strategies and technologies necessary to begin to fix this problem,” said Joe Sitt, a real estate developer who founded Global Gateway Alliance. Sitt said better communications between the New York/New Jersey Port Authority and terminal operators would help, as would installation of new FAA-tested technology to reduce delays.
The Port Authority will spend around $11 billion over the next 10 years to improve the area’s airports.
