New Luxury in Hamburg

The doors are ready to swing open this fall in Germany at The Fontenay Hamburg, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. With a planned launch in October, the new luxury property is located on Hamburg’s city lake, Lake Alster, and is a showstopper: There are no straight walls and no walls that parallel one another. To accommodate this unique design, furnishings were custom made for all spaces, including 131 light-filled guestrooms and suites. To accommodate the curvature of the corridors, carpets were custom woven in Hong Kong. The architectural design, created by Hamburg native Jan Störmer of Störmer Murphy and Partners, brings to mind three intertwining circles with a surface made up of thousands of white porcelain tiles that serve as a mirror for the lake and surrounding parkland.

An indoor-outdoor swimming pool and full-service spa share prime roof space with a gourmet restaurant offering views of the lake and the city. Michelin-starred executive chef Cornelius Speinle received his training at internationally acclaimed restaurants that include The Fat Duck in Bray, England. One floor under the restaurant, there’s a bar and terrace with even more views, while the ground-floor garden restaurant offers a Nordic-inspired menu. Need meeting space? Four function rooms are available for meetings and events. The hotel opening adds to Hamburg’s growing allure. Recent stunning city upgrades include the just-opened Herzog & de Meuron-designed glass Elbphilharmonie concert hall, and the Zaha Hadid-designed promenade along the Elbe and historic Speicherstadt.

Fairfield by Marriott Phnom Penh Review

Phnom Penh as we imagined it stretches beneath us: a picturesque, low-rise mix of Southeast Asian and French Colonial styles. When the inhabitants of those buildings look back at us here in the Fairfield by Marriott hotel in Chip Mong Tower, they see the future.

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
