Most travelers use the often dreadful hours on an airplane to catch up on sleep, work or favorite television shows or movies, but a new air travel trend is working to improve the in-flight experience from an awkward game of battling armrests to an opportunity for networking before a big event.

Lufthansa’s themed flights are geared toward passengers attending a specific event like a corporate conference or trade show. As part of the flight, guests will have access to free WiFi, event programming in order to start planning their attendance and the opportunity to swap business cards with other passengers attending the same event.

Themed flights hosted by the German airline so far included a flight from Frankfurt, Germany (FRA), to the South by Southwest music festival in Texas, as well as a route to New York Fashion Week, complete with an in-flight runway show. 

Lufthansa hopes this initiative will propel the travel industry into a future of themed flights whereupon guests can use these normally drab hours in a more productive and entertaining way.
