Photographer Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952) embarked upon a three-decades-long mission to document, through photography, the lives and culture of North America’s Native American people. Presented by the Palm Springs Art Museum, the broad retrospective Edward S. Curtis: One Hundred Masterworks includes a stunning array of vintage photographs from Curtis’ seminal life’s work, which resulted in a 20-volume, 20-portfolio set of handmade books with more than 2,200 of the photographer’s original images.
Running through May 29, this exhibition of Curtis’ extraordinary artistic historic record is accompanied by Changing the Tone: Contemporary American Indian Photographers, celebrating the works of contemporary living artists of Native American heritage. Works representing cultural heritage, relationships with the environment and portraiture by Gerald Clarke, Will Wilson, Kent Monkman, Nicholas Galanin, Shelley Niro, and Lewis de Soto are on display. The museum is located in downtown Palm Springs at 101 Museum Drive.
