Mexico Travel Advisory Update

The U.S. Department of State released warnings for U.S. travelers heading to Mexico, but what exactly does it mean?

A new four-level travel system rolled out, intended to make security information clearer, but it also creates a lot of confusion. Mexico as a whole is at a level two advisory, meaning travelers are encouraged to “exercise increased caution,” but five states within the country are at a level four — the “do not travel” category.

Other countries occupying level-two security designation include France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium and Denmark. The lucky level-one countries include Argentina, Canada, Chile, Japan, Ireland, Australia and Hong Kong.

The five Mexican states at a level-four advisory are the Pacific regions of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán and Sinaloa, plus Tamaulipas on the Gulf of Mexico. These states are on the same level as war-torn Somalia, Afghanistan, Yemen and Syria.

Under the new system, level one is “exercise normal precautions,” level two is “exercise increased caution,” level three is “reconsider travel,” and level four is “do not travel.”

You can see a full list of countries and advisory levels at travel.state.gov.
