During the first six months of 2017, Cuba saw nearly 2.7 million visitors arrive to explore the country once forbidden to Americans, a number on track to surpass 2016’s visitor count of 4.1 million. Despite the ambiguity surrounding the future of Americans’ ability to travel to Cuba, Marriott International plans to move forward with its property expansion on the Caribbean island.
As the first U.S. hotel chain to build on Cuban soil in more than 50 years, the brand hopes to continue building its presence, as interest in traveling to Cuba skyrocketed within the past year.
In addition to the brand’s existing Sheraton Four Points in Havana’s neighborhood of Miramar, Marriott has a few more properties in mind for locations both in and outside the capital city. One such project involves renovating a 19th-century hotel, the Inglaterra.
The United States’ current administration may prohibit American companies from building and expanding their presence in Cuba, but those companies that already have contracts and agreements in place will not be affected by any new regulations.
