The traditional black taxis navigating the crowded streets of London will soon meander through the royal city silently. The English capital city mandated all London taxi drivers switch from gas-powered vehicles to electric vehicles, with 34 currently operating and 20 new cabs taking to the streets each week.
The electric vehicles are the first international sale from Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd., a Chinese company with a subsidiary — the London Electric Vehicle Company — in England. London taxis will operate under the name “the electric TX” and employ eCity technology with battery-electric power and a partial gasoline generator. Using the power from these two processors, the vehicles have a range of 400 miles plus, resulting in no environmental emissions. With such a range, drivers will be able to travel to destinations like Edinburgh and Paris without stopping for fuel.
Geely’s CEO notes the new vehicles will save drivers up to $129 in gas per week. Improved features for passengers include less vibration and noise in the cabins as well as charging sockets for phones and WiFi connectivity.
