Beijing’s solitary international airport is about to get a new neighbor as the Chinese capital city begins work on a new international airport to debut in 2019.
Beijing Daxing International Airport will be China’s largest airport, serving up to 100 million passengers per year and comprising seven runways. The airport construction project will also be the country’s most expensive, coming to $13 billion.
Officials hope the new airport will take some pressure off Beijing Capital International Airport, which currently stands as the world’s second busiest, seeing nearly 95 million annual passengers through its gates despite its initial intended capacity of 80 million people per year.
Beijing Daxing will feature the world’s largest terminal at 7.5 million square feet and will connect passengers to all major public transit services. SkyTeam’s China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines will occupy the majority of gates and will provide hundreds of new routes between China, Europe and the United States.
