India’s First Bullet Train Will Go Underwater

India will soon have its own bullet train, but not just any bullet train. The train will shave a sizable chunk off the time it takes to go from Mumbai and Ahmadabad with a portion of the journey underwater between Thane and Virar.

Officials are preparing for the initial stages of what could be the country’s first bullet train — infrastructure that would turn a seven-hour commute into a two-hour commute.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency agreed to pay for a reported 80 percent of the estimated $14.5 billion bill through a 50-year loan. Indian Railways and state governments of Maharashtra and Gujarat would shoulder the rest of the cost, with the Indian Railways investing about $1.5 billion.

“Soil and rocks below the 70-meter-deep see [sic] are being tested as part of the geo-technical and geo-physical investigation undertaken for the entire project. The test will also cover the 21-km-long underground tunnel between Thane and Virar,” said a senior official, Railway Ministry.

The major transportation project is currently in its development stage, with actual construction to begin in 2018. The soil will soon be tested prior to a tunnel being burrowed on a portion of the planned rail. The project, completed by 2023, will whisk locals and tourists through the country at about 217 mph.

For India, the project represents a massive push to modernize its railway with a line that will embolden travelers from all over the world.
