With around 10 million passengers expected to pass through Iceland’s Keflavik Airport this year — representing a growth of more than five times over the last nine years — the facility is forced to expand.
Last year alone, the airport’s passenger numbers grew 28 percent to 8.76 million, and this year it’s predicted to hit 10 million. To accommodate the growth, the airport will pour around $1 billion into expansions and improvements. The money will be spent over seven to eight years on projects including new airline slots and additional routes.
Iceland’s domestic carriers, Icelandair and WOW air, recently launched routes to some of North America’s mid-sized cities. Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines and Air Canada have new flights in the works or recently launched.
The airport has not only received large numbers of visitors to Iceland but also became a hub for travelers from Europe en route to North America, and vice versa. The airport expanded several times since it first opened in 1987.
