Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William Hobby Airport pilot a new smart restroom program aimed at improving bathroom efficiency at airports.
The new devices are located at restrooms near D9 and A17 at IAH and gates 29 and 30 at HOU. Bathroom users can submit a satisfaction report using happy and sad faces based on their experience. Selecting a sad face prompts the user to indicate the particular issues they encountered, such as dirty stalls, wet floors and lack of toilet paper, among others.
“Passengers have repeatedly told us through customer survey results that clean and modern restroom facilities rank at or near the top of their priority list,” said Mario Diaz, aviation director, Houston Airport System. “This pilot program is proof that we’re hearing that message and working hard to meet their expectations. By combining the hard work of our dedicated staff and this impressive technical tool, we’re confident that this pilot program will result in a greatly enhanced overall customer experience.”
In addition to the feedback system, the smart restroom uses sensors to monitor passenger input into individual airport restrooms, allowing the custodial staff to be automatically notified when a restroom reached a number of users.
The airport will evaluate the technology over the next few months with additional locations added in the future.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
