At the new National Geographic Encounter: Ocean Odyssey, cutting-edge science takes visitors below the surface on a digital dive (that doesn’t involve getting wet) into the waters of the South Pacific and North America’s western coast.
Designed as an interactive, ground-breaking, high-tech experience by a team of creators comprised of Academy, Emmy and Grammy award-winning artists (including the visual effects wizards from the HBO television series Game of Thrones), the immersive tour brings visitors face to face with life-sized versions of sharks measuring 20 feet in length, massive Humboldt squids engaged in battle and a 50-foot humpback whale.
Marine biologist David Gruber, a specialist in bioluminescent and biofluorescent marine life, was part of the creation. An Interactive Floor, nighttime coral reef and a Bait Ball scene are part of the digital dive. Located at 226 West 44th Street between 7th and 8th avenues at Times Square, the attraction is open daily 10 a.m.–10:30 p.m., Sunday–Thursday, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday. Purchasing tickets in advance is recommended. Private event space is also available.
