A celebrity in the world of design and architecture for his contributions to central Germany’s art nouveau and midcentury modernism, Henry van de Velde arrived in Weimer in 1902 as a consultant to Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst. Van de Velde became the founder of the School of Applied Arts, and personally designed furniture, houses, interiors, textiles and crockery.
His body of work is being celebrated this year with exhibitions in numerous locations throughout Germany. A few of the highlights: until June 23, the Klassik Stiftung Weimer will host “Passion, Function and Beauty: Henry van de Velde and his Contribution to European Modernity; beginning on March 29, the Bauhaus University will unveil its exhibition The Architect Henry van de Velde,” which includes a 3D-modelling program presented by the students.
