If you’re a foodie, chances are you’ve heard of star chef Thomas Keller’s famed French Laundry in the tiny gastro-hip town of Yountville, about two hours from San Francisco. While a menu by Keller is always an event, there are plenty of other stellar dining choices, all within walking distance of one another, each regularly drawing culinary pilgrims from around the world. Here are four you may not have heard of, each worthy of a culinary expedition.

  • Bistro Jeanty: The domain of Champagne, France-born Chef Philippe Jeanty, this beloved Yountville staple draws diners from around the globe, featuring a menu of French country classics and favorite dishes from the chef’s own childhood. The bistro is housed in a cottage with a light-filled front dining area and cozy back area. Reservations are an absolute must. You’ll understand why once you’ve tasted Chef Jeanty’s tomato soup in puff pastry; Camembert baked in a box with a truffled salad; escargots with garlic pastis butter; pancetta-wrapped rabbit loin; or his absolutely divine coq au vin. And yes, there’s also an exceptional wine list.
    Youtville Dining
  • Lucy Restaurant & Bar: This fine-dining restaurant is located within the Bardessono Hotel, recognized for a host of award-winning environmental initiatives. The restaurant focuses on field-to-fork dining, drawing from the surrounding countryside for the freshest, most eco-inspired ingredients. Devoted to conscious cooking, executive chef Nate Lindsay offers breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. For breakfast and lunch, dishes include Bananas Foster French Toast, Al Pastor Pork Belly Tacos and Fork Rolled Gnocchi. The dinner menu is split into themes: Ocean and Range. Sample dishes include Dungeness Crab Risotto, Grapeseed Poached Halibut, Tomato Spaetzle and Peach Glazed Pork Ribs.
  • Ottimo!: Named for the Italian word meaning “optimal,” this hip breakfast and lunch eatery operated by Chef Michael Chiarello includes a wide terrace for outdoor dining and an indoor coffeehouse vibe. Try a cinnamon monkey muffin or strawberry and rhubarb crostata for breakfast, or a more substantial spring frittata with asparagus, potatoes, spring onions and salsa rosa served up with arugula salad. For lunch, order a custom wood-fired pizza to enjoy with your wine or Italian soda, and stick around for creative gelato choices such as the candy cap mushroom with cinnamon swirl flavor.
  • REDD Wood: Located in the lower level of Hotel Nikko, the menu at REDD Wood changes daily. The casual dining venue from chef Richard Reddington (his other fine-dining restaurant is Redd, also in Yountville), the menu is devoted to luscious wood-fired pizzas, chicken, steak and pasta dishes. The drink menu includes handcrafted cocktails, ciders, beer and wine by the glass and the bottle. Menus include lunch, midday and dinner choices. Be sure to try a Tai Tuck, blended with siddiqui and zaya rum, orange, pineapple, pomegranate and orgeat (almond).

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
