Always a great destination for a getaway, Farmington, N.M., has everything necessary for an outdoor adventure. For off-roading, the tracks and trails in Chokecherry Canyon are riddled with enormous sand dunes, technical trails, steep hills and sandy arroyos. Five fishing locations include Navajo, Jackson and Morgan lakes, plus Cutter Reservoir and Lake Farmington. Recreational activities range from river rafting along the Animas, paddleboarding in Lake Farmington, fly fishing the San Juan River Quality Waters and kayaking Animas River White Water Park.
Tours — self or professionally guided — of the area’s history and culture can explore Dinetah Rock Art and Pueblitos, where more than 200 small pueblos were constructed between 1680 and 1775, made up of hogans, sweat lodges and other structures. There’s more archaeology in the Bisti Badlands and De-Na-Zin Wilderness, where hikers can see dinosaur excavations. To stay in the mood, opt for truly quirky lodging at Kokopelli’s Cave Bed & Breakfast, a manmade cave built directly into the vertical sandstone cliffs of Tertiary Ojo Alamo where the amenities in the 1,700-square-foot space include a waterfall shower, Jacuzzi, replica kiva, full kitchen, master bedroom, living area and two porches accessed via sliding glass doors.

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.

I am looking out at Vietnam’s largest city from the country’s tallest building. Sitting in a comfortable chair facing the floor-to-ceiling window, I have taken in the view in daylight and darkness at dusk and dawn. It’s ever-changing and always hypnotic.
