A battery-powered, all-electric plane was the star of a recent Silicon Valley showcase for the tech industry’s most promising startups. The so-called Y Combinator Demo Day last month saw the passenger aircraft from Wright Electric generate some serious buzz.
Tech Crunch reports the company’s concept plane would run exclusively on batteries for short-haul flights of up to 300 miles. The plane is currently being built and would have 150 seats. It’s designed to compete with commercial aircraft like the Boeing 737.
The company already built battery-powered planes, though they’re only two seats. Company officials said future advances would allow the plane to fly farther on batteries only, though a hybrid fuel-battery set-up might be required between now and then.
Wright Electric’s goal is to convert all short-haul flights to electric-powered planes within 20 years. The company’s design involves a modular battery pack that can be changed at the airport tarmac.
British carrier Easyjet is reportedly interested in Wright Electric’s products, while Airbus is also working on an electric concept.
