Osaka developed as a town of merchants, so it comes as no surprise that shopping remains a big part of the Osaka experience.
If the weather is bad, you don’t have to contend with it in Osaka, which boasts some of the largest underground shopping arcades in the world, spreading mostly from Osaka Station and in downtown Namba.
Aboveground, Namba’s Shinsaibashisuji shopping street is an old-fashioned covered pedestrian lane; some of its shops have been serving customers for a couple hundred years. Less than a block away lies Midosuji Dori, a wide boulevard lined with gingko trees and home to luxury brand stores from around the world. Well-established department stores like Daimaru, Hankyu and Takashimaya are microcosms of the Japanese lifestyle, with everything from teapots and clothing to food. New to the scene is Kintetsu Abeno Harukas, which occupies 16 floors of Japan’s tallest building and claims to be the largest department store in Japan.
The most atmospheric places to shop are retail areas devoted to specific goods, like Kuromon Ichiba Market with its fresh fish, vegetables and fruit; Nipponbashi Denden Town with its electronics stores mixed with shops selling manga, anime and costumes; and Sennichimae Doguyasuji, a cook’s dream with everything from chopsticks to kitchen knives sold from several dozen open-fronted shops.
