We’ve seen jaw-dropping auction highlights, discussed the topic of custom jewelry and footwear, and kept tabs on the best new watch releases unveiled in 2016. While we’d love to give you a full digest of all the great things to roll across our desks, that’d burn a few too many pages in a hurry. Instead, we present three favorite items we covered this past year.

Among the many auctions slated for the coming months, we’ve found a handful of items worthy of note.

Jul 11, 2016Home Décor
As we drift closer to prime season for home renovation, it’s time to look at what’s happening in the everchanging world of interior decorating and design. While some trends have come and gone in the blink of an eye, others are still going strong. Thankfully, the painful clutter of the “found artifact” scene is fading away while concepts like Zen-like white minimalism and the subtle influence of mid-century modernism remain popular. With this in mind, here are a few of our favorite items for renewing your living space. Ligne Roset When it comes to living room furnishings, the days of choosing between ultra-modern and tastefully traditional are long behind us. Combining the new and old can be tricky, and certain furniture lines have it figured out perfectly. A quick skim through the Ligne Roset sofa and armchair catalog reveals a broad selection of sleek home furnishings that clearly pull influence from some of the Danish design greats without coming across as purely vintage pieces. In particular, the Cosse sofa, designed by Philippe Nigro, features a gorgeous blend of clean lines and interesting textures that add an air of warmth to an otherwise stark exterior. Sofa from $5,205, loveseat from $4,230 and ottoman from $1,465. ligne-roset.com © Leona Mozes Lumid/Firelab The modern and minimalist fireplace is by no means a new trend, though interior designers continually push the boundaries of how large a footprint one can take up. Curved fronts, flames that rise through water and sealed units that shed next to no heat to the outside of the glass are just a few tricks modern fireplace builders have up their sleeves. In business for 25 years, Lumid/Firelab worked on custom fireplaces in all sorts of applications from the massive private residence install seen here to the roaring cauldron of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Its in-house R&D team spent countless hours developing proprietary systems to ensure no matter how large a client’s demand, the end product will reach if not surpass high expectations. firelab.com

May 24, 2016Baselworld 2016 Recap
Baselworld is always filled with jaw-dropping sights and sounds, and though some of the industry’s big guns seemed content to showcase mere color variations and subtle updates of existing pieces, the show floor still presented a good number of surprises. We scoured Baselworld from top to bottom and corner to corner to determine which of the year’s latest releases to shop for later this year. Chanel Monsieur de Chanel Though a few years behind the likes of Ralph Lauren and Hermès, Chanel’s freshman foray into men’s luxury watchmaking proves truly exceptional. The Monsieur de Chanel is a stunning though understated piece of hardware boasting a gorgeous in-house movement with jumping hours and retrograde minutes. This piece will garner plenty of attention from those “in the know.” White gold, $36,000; beige gold, $34,500. chanel.com Bell & Ross BR-X1 Hyperstellar Bell & Ross has always done big and bold aviation instrument-inspired watches quite well, but the BR-X1 Hyperstellar takes matters into the upper stratosphere. A combination of titanium and bright blue aluminum alloy makes the piece as visually stunning as it is practical for those entering outer orbit. Bell & Ross went out of its way to make this piece a genuine candidate for astronauts and cosmonauts around the globe by combining lightweight components with the functionality of ultra-wide chronograph pushers you could operate through a spacesuit. That said, plenty of us more grounded individuals would happily add it to our personal collections. bellross.com Seiko Presage Chronograph No doubt at least a few collectors will shake their heads and wonder why Seiko made this list. Before anyone gets too far ahead of themselves, the brand continues to make extraordinary headway into the realm of haute horlogerie with the majority of its Grand Seiko offerings, and this Presage chronograph is nearly impossible to beat in terms of a value-per-dollar proposition. Available in either a traditional white enamel dial or a remarkably deep black handworked urushi lacquer, this sleek 42mm chronograph wears brilliantly on the wrist. With plain mass-produced chronographs in the $4,000–5,000 range saturating the market, this Seiko gem truly provides a breath of fresh air. White enamel, $2,300; black lacquer, $2,600. www.seikowatches.com
