Delta’s Fourth Quarter Looks Promising

Delta Air Lines has a positive outlook for the rest of the year, including passenger revenue numbers increasing 3.6 percent year over year to $9.4 billion in the third quarter. The carrier reported the highest year-end corporate travel outlook in years.

The company’s most recent survey of corporate travel managers shows more than 85 percent will maintain or increase spending levels in the fourth quarter this year and into next year. Delta president Glen Hauenstein reported the news in an earnings call last month.

That data is 9 percent higher than last year’s and marks the highest fourth-quarter results since the company began the survey in 2011.

Corporate prices rose for the third quarter too, marking the first time both fares and volume increased at the same time in three years, Hauenstein reported.

Business travel grew on trans-Atlantic routes especially, and Delta saw its first positive unit revenue growth in three years in that area.

“Europe is coming out of a multiyear recession,” said Hauenstein. “The U.S. economy is strong, and people are traveling for business, which plays to the strength of a carrier that’s embracing the business model.”
