Delta Air Lines introduces four self-service bag drop machines at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport this summer. Delta is the first U.S. carrier to trial a self-service bag drop machine equipped with facial recognition technology.
The carrier says the biometric self-service machine will enable it to match customers with passport photos through identification verification. The $600,000 investment allows customers to quickly secure and easily check bags.
“We expected this investment and new process to save customers time,” said Gareth Joyce, senior vice president, Delta Air Ljnes. “And, since customers can operate the biometric-based bag drop machine independently, we see a future where Delta agents will be freed up to seek out travelers and deliver more proactive and thoughtful customer service.”
The introduction of self-service bag drops and facial recognition technology is the next step to streamline airport processes, complemented by Delta’s industry-leading radio frequency identification technology. Previous self-service innovations like ticketing kiosks, check-in via the app, a luggage tracking service and a new system of boarding lines at Atlanta (ATL) transformed congested lobby areas and dramatically improved customer satisfaction scores.
The carrier will collect customer feedback during the self-service bag drop trial and run process analyses to ensure the lobby enhancement improves the overall customer experience.
