It’s no secret many Iceland locals believe in “hidden people” or elves, trolls and other creatures. Iceland Air advertises that nearly 80 percent of Icelanders believe in elves, though only children really believe in trolls. The ominous lava formations around the country were once explained away as trolls turning to stone when caught in daylight.

The town of Hafnarfjörður is famous for its settlements of what is known as huldufólk, or hidden folk. Folklore weaves tales of such mystical creatures living in rocks creating the town’s center. Host Sigurbjörg Karlsdóttir guides guests through a Hidden World Walk to dwellings and hot spots, relating stories about the town’s history, rumored encounters and how the locals developed the area in harmony with their mystical neighbors. Stops include Hellisgerdi Park and Hamarinn, among others. The latter is largely regarded as the home of the Royal Family of Hidden Folk.

Hidden World Walks are currently scheduled to depart on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2:30 p.m. during the summer months, but special requests can be made for other times. Tours last 90 minutes to two hours.
