Warning: You are about to enter a testosterone-fueled world of fumes, flames, burning rubber, extreme noise, g-forces, beer and rowdy camaraderie.
Of course, the spectacle of the drag racing speedway — ludicrous vehicles accelerating down a straight track at ludicrous speeds — is not an all-male dominion. There are even a few female drivers willing to put their lives on the line, Shirley “Cha Cha” Muldowney, Ashley Force and Shelley Anderson to name a few.
But, mostly, drag racing serves as the ultimate manifestation of an innate instinct that most men can trace back to boyhood. Give a young boy a toy car, and he will soon bring it to life with a repertoire of engine noises. Give a grown man a real car, and he’s likely to live out the fantasy: to go as fast as possible while making as much noise as possible. It is a compulsion often expressed in regular cars on regular roads, but as long as there have been cars, there have also been enthusiastic amateurs intent on modifying them to achieve greater speed and increased decibels.
These pioneering petrol-heads eventually gave rise to a formal sport, which, by the 1950s, required dedicated venues. Disused airfields were converted into speedways, with the runways serving as drag strips wide enough for two vehicles to race side by side.
Through the years, five main classes of racing vehicles evolved: pro stock bike (essentially a souped-up motorcycle), pro stock car (a souped-up road car), pro modified car (a road car altered from the chassis up), funny car (a dedicated racing chassis topped with a carbon fiber shell that resembles a road car) and the top-fuel dragster (the distinctive long-nosed vehicle designed purely for drag racing).
During a race, the drivers are subjected to forces of more than 5G (compared to the 3G experienced by astronauts during a shuttle launch). At full throttle, a top-fuel dragster burns fuel at the same rate as a fully-loaded Boeing 747. The dragster can accelerate from a standing start to 100 mph in three-quarters of a second. Speeds of more than 300 mph can be achieved during a quarter-mile run. Parachutes have to be deployed to bring the vehicle to a halt.
The dangers of this, the fastest of all land-based sports, are obvious. If a dragster veers from its line or suffers a tire blowout or if the engine explodes, the driver is at the mercy of fate. Even without incident, every run subjects the human body to severe physical stress, sometimes resulting in bone fractures or permanent eyesight problems. The element of danger undoubtedly intensifies the adrenaline rush experienced by drivers and spectators.
During an event, the air is infused with the stench of the volatile nitromethane that provides the vehicles with their explosive power. Engines rev at ear-splitting volume. Plumes of flame gush from the exhausts.
Few things in life can compare to the sensory thrill of the speedway.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
