Batu Caves is not for the faint of heart or short of breath. Located approximately seven miles from downtown Kuala Lumpur, this hill of 400-million-year-old limestone houses a series of awe-inspiring natural caverns. While the caves are impressive, there’s a hitch. Getting to the cave entrance involves climbing 272 steep steps surrounded by dozens of cheeky, chattering macaque monkeys who swing from the bushes and scramble along the wall. If you make it to the top, you’ll be treated to a view of Temple Cave with its 300-foot-high ceilings. If you’re up for a few more stairs, walk down into the cave for a closer look at the interior.

Those who choose to give the climb a pass can check out the world’s tallest statue of Hindu deity Murugan. At the foot of the stairs, the 140-foot-high statue, covered in 80 gallons of gold paint, is dazzling. You’ll also find plenty of alfresco cafés for relaxing over a cup of tea or soft drink.
