Smokin’ Pig, South Carolina

by Julie Haupin

Nov 15, 2017

The best homestyle barbecue I have ever eaten is hands down from Smokin’ Pig in South Carolina. This hot spot is located right outside of Clemson University, making it a popular destination among visitors, locals and students. I travel to South Carolina frequently and sample a lot of different BBQ joints, but this one tops them all.

Smokin’ Pig offers traditional BBQ-style meals ranging from chicken and pork to ribs, brisket, etc. What makes it so special is the amazing atmosphere and Southern hospitality. You can pick from a sandwich, platter or combo platter and choose between a handful of sides. I usually get the jalapeño cheddar grits or the loaded potato casserole, but during my last trip I found its coleslaw is one of my favorite things on the menu.

After visiting Smokin’ Pig several times and choosing between the pork or chicken and fumbling over which side to get, I have finally mastered my order. Chopped chicken, loaded potato casserole and coleslaw topped with the mustard-infused BBQ sauce. Nothing can top it.

The portions are typical Southern BBQ style — huge — which makes it a great place to share or get a to-go box.

If you want to try out this fabulous BBQ joint, make sure you go early. When Clemson is bustling on game day weekend, the line may be out the door. If you don’t mind waiting, take advantage of the fire pit and corn hole games in the waiting area.

Hint: If you have a large group, go to the back room full of long tables and great décor inspired by college game day, with flags surrounding the building. The only thing that would make Smokin’ Pig better is if there was a Penn State flag hanging on the walls, too!

Mindfulness City in Kingdom of Bhutan Unveiled as Future Economic Hub

In front of an audience of 30,000 Kingdom of Bhutan residents and officials, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck presented his vision for a new economic hub in Bhutan. Located between India to the south and China to the north, Bhutan is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Bhutan came late to global tourism. It opened its borders to international visitors in 1974 and, while tourism definitely increased, residents are enduring “light” rush-hour traffic in Thimphu, its capital city, as the only Asian capital without traffic lights.
