From pyramids to pharaohs, there’s no other place in the world that says history and archaeology like Egypt. Be sure to fit in some (or all!) of these exquisite locations on your next trip to the Gift of the Nile:

  • Mummification Museum, Luxor: Who goes to Egypt without seeing a mummy or two? At this museum, you can view multiple human and animal mummies while learning the beliefs surrounding mummification, along with details about the process.
  • Luxor Museum, Luxor: Sporting a new annex dedicated to Egypt’s Golden Age, this gem of a museum has collections including master works of Pharaonic art and a group of statues discovered hidden beneath the Luxor Temple.
  • Alexandria National Museum: Within this beautiful villa (the former home of a powerful merchant), the history of Alexandria is laid out from the Pharaonic era to the 19th century. Displays include weapons, Coptic icons, china and other artifacts found submerged in the city’s bay.
  • Nubian Museum, Aswan: Set within a garden with waterfalls, this museum includes a staging area for musical and dance performances. Inside, exhibitions illuminate traditional Nubian culture from different eras including geological, Pharaonic, Roman, Coptic and Islamic times.
  • Egyptian Museum, Cairo: An enormous and impressive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities is housed in this complex, including many valuable artifacts from the country’s ancient past.
  • Aswan Museum, Aswan: Located on the southernmost tip of Elephantine Island in Aswan — known as the Land of Gold in antiquity — this museum first opened in 1912. Its collections include mummies, statuary and pottery, with a garden surrounding the ruins of Abu.
  • Egyptian Modern Art Museum, Cairo: Also known as the Gezira Center for Modern Art, the museum houses permanent collections of art by Egypt’s most celebrated artists plus works by international painters including Monet, Gauguin and Van Gogh.
  • The Royal Jewelry Museum, Alexandria: View riches, rare paintings and a host of glittery things including diamond-encrusted garden tools in the former palace of Fatma el-Zahara, itself worth a view.

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
