The merger between Alaska Airlines and Virgin America took another step forward, with the two brands now using a single FAA operating certificate. Alaska purchased Virgin in 2016 and gradually integrates the brand into Alaska’s.
Other steps included closing Virgin’s Elevate loyalty program Dec. 31. Member discounts were moved to the Alaska Airlines Mileage Program. Starting in late April, the two will use a single reservation system.
The company obtained a single operating certificate for both carriers’ flights. Alaska said the move “will not result in any immediate differences for guests when flying with Alaska or Virgin America.” The group said it was, “another significant milestone in the integration of the two airlines.”
In March, Alaska announced it would retire the Virgin America brand altogether. The combined group, including Horizon Air, offers flights to 115 destinations with an average 1,200 flights a day.
