Aeroflot, Russia’s national carrier, unveiled plans to launch a new airline that will serve the country’s Far East. The new Aurora Airlines was formed based on the merger of two Aeroflot subsidiaries — SAT Airlines and Vladivostok Avia — that currently serve 42 and 15 destinations respectively. By 2018, the new carrier plans to increase operational activities in the Far East from a route network of 30 destinations to 128 and boost the number of daily flights from 172 to 534. It will initially operate service with a fleet of existing medium-haul Boeing 737s and will receive three Airbus A319 aircraft by the end of this year and an additional four by the end of 2014.
