Dubai is the most visited of the United Arab Emirates, with 5.82 million foreign tourists last year, while Abu Dhabi is the largest (and also the capital). But they are just two of the seven distinct emirates that form the federation of U.A.E. The others are Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain.
Although none of them are as flashy as their two dominant neighbors, they are worth exploring. The first task is to identify where one ends and the next begins. Only Abu Dhabi and Umm al-Quwain are territorially monolithic. All of the other emirates are fragmented into a patchwork of small territories.
Sharjah, immediately adjacent to Dubai, is the most conservative. Visitors should dress accordingly and be aware it is illegal to transport alcohol through the emirate without a license. It’s also illegal for an unmarried couple to share a hotel room.
The east coast of U.A.E., facing the Indian Ocean, provides a contrast to Dubai’s flat desert setting. Here, tiny Arabian villages, seemingly unchanged in centuries, nestle amid a moonscape of rugged mountains. Fujairah is the only emirate entirely confined to the east coast and offers some comfortable beach resorts. The real highlight is the drive there.
In Ras al-Khaimah, the hilltop Golden Tulip Khatt Springs Resort & Spa is one of the best inland retreats in the U.A.E., with views of the mountains.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
